This year we’ll have special guests coming to the 2016 Festival of 1000 Stories from near and far. We’re excited to be welcoming Sydney Story Factory for the first time, all the way from Redfern. They’ll be in Bourke from 4-9 September.
Sydney Story Factory is a not-for-profit creative writing centre that runs workshops for young people aged 7 to 17, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds. The centre’s co-founder and executive director, Cath Keenan, was recognised as Australia’s Local Hero 2016 in the Australian of the Year Awards.
The Sydney Story Factory team will be delivering fun creative writing workshops with local schools and community groups including St Ignatius’ Primary School, Bourke High School, Brewarrina Central School and Centacare. Some of these workshops are part of a much bigger project called State of Mind, a state-wide project that’s documenting and sharing the diversity of teenage experiences.
Under the guidance of the Sydney Story Factory’s expert storytelling team, young people will build the skills and confidence essential for future success. One of the storytellers, Helen Coolican, grew up in Bourke and is especially looking forward to returning to where it all began for her!
