John Thorn visited Bourke in Sep 2013 on a road trip with his father Tim and other members of the Melbourne Savage Club. Their aim was to retrace the steps of Henry Lawson. Knowing very little about the great writer but with events planned along the way he thought he could offer his skills a professional composer and set a few of Lawson’s poems. He premiered one in Bourke at Diggers On The Darling last September and returned to Melbourne with a desire to continue the quest.
Less than a year later John returns to Bourke to present the World Premiere of his new show LOOKING FOR LAWSON. John will sing his original settings of 16 of Lawson’s best loved poems with narration and excerpts of his life and prose supplied by the legendary David McCubbin.
Thorn’s musical settings have already generated great acclaim and the show has more bookings following the Bourke premier at the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival (Vic) and in Deniliquin.
Poems to feature in the show include ANDY’S GONE WITH CATTLE, FACES IN THE STREET, WHEN YOUR PANTS BEGIN TO GO and WHEN THE ARMY PRAYS FOR WATTY (written about the publican of the Carrier Arms Hotel, which John visited touring his stay last year).
John Thorn is an award winning composer and musical director and accompanies many of Australia’s finest performers around the country and overseas. He has written 4 musicals and hundreds of songs for cabaret shows and events.
